The fifth edition of the Teguise Agriculture, Livestock, and Fishing Fair has been inaugurated this Thursday in Lanzarote at the municipality's Agrotechnological Center. This space will bring together producers, professionals, entities, and visitors around agriculture, livestock, and fishing until next Sunday.
The inaugural event was attended by the mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque; the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero; the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort; the president of the Federation of Agricultural and Fishing Associations of Lanzarote (FASAT), Omar Viña; and the director of Institutional Relations of CajaSiete, José Manuel Garrido.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, thanked FASAT and all the individuals, groups, entities, and companies that make the celebration of this fair possible, as well as the collaboration of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Government of the Canary Islands, CajaSiete, and the rest of the institutions and sponsors that support this initiative.
“Reaching the fifth edition of this fair demonstrates the strength of a project that has grown thanks to the joint work of administrations, entities, and professionals in the sector,” said Duque, who highlighted that “from the Teguise City Council, we will continue to promote spaces that allow us to showcase the work done throughout the year and bring the reality of the primary sector closer to residents and visitors.”
The mayor added that “this fair has established itself as a meeting point for the entire island and an opportunity to recognize the effort of those who contribute daily to the economic, social, and cultural development of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.”
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, thanked, during his speech, "the effort and involvement of all those people and entities for continuing to believe in a fair that represents the best of our land.”
Betancort highlighted that this event "is much more than an exhibition of products, machinery or activities," as it constitutes "a tribute to those who work every day in the field and at sea, keeping alive activities that are part of our collective identity." Likewise, the president recognized the dedication of farmers, ranchers, and fishermen who, "getting up before dawn to care for their crops, attend to their animals, or go out to work, contribute with their daily effort to preserve a legacy that has shaped the landscape, economy, and culture of Lanzarote for generations."
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, highlighted that "this event allows us to bring the reality of our primary sector closer to citizens and recognize the work of those who produce quality food, conserve our landscapes, and keep our traditions alive." He also stressed "the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands in this fair, through the Canary Institute of Agri-food Quality (ICCA), with various initiatives aimed at valuing local products," and added that "the future of the sector involves strengthening proximity production, promoting generational change, and ensuring that agricultural, livestock, and fishing activity is an attractive and profitable professional option for new generations."
Tribute to Young and Old
Once the inaugural tour of the fair concluded, the tribute to young and old people from Lanzarote's primary sector was held, a recognition of the effort, dedication, and commitment of those who contribute to the present and future of the island's field and sea.
In this edition, Alexandra González Viera was recognized as a young rancher; Jorge Facundo Reyes, as an elder rancher; Karliana Aguilera, as a young farmer; Magdalena Ramos de León, as an elder farmer; Álvaro Hernández Espinosa, as a young fisherman; and Gregorio Agustín Páez Guadalupe, as an elder fisherman. Likewise, Teno Osorio was honored for his career and contribution to Lanzarote's primary sector.
The fair, organized by the Teguise City Council and FASAT with the collaboration of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, the Government of the Canary Islands and numerous public and private entities, will continue throughout the weekend with livestock exhibitions, tastings, workshops, family activities and spaces dedicated to innovation and dissemination of the primary sector.
