The Carnival of Puerto del Carmen, dedicated to "The crazy 20s", kicked off yesterday with the presentation of Ruiz Rodríguez and Fran Vega and the staging of the dancers from M&G Eventos and the beloved character of Charlot represented by Juan Medina Guzmán. The participants contributed nods to the carnival theme, a time of enjoyment and liberation that will be concentrated in the streets of Puerto del Carmen on February 19, 20, 21, and 22 in the coastal town
Miriam Hernández affectionately congratulates the groups for their entire journey, as Chimbay celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and the Guaracheros participated these days in the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and returned to Lanzarote with the third prize for Costumes.
The Cultural Group Batucada Chimbay, created in 2006, took the stage under the allegory The guardian of the eternal spirit. Its 22 members, led by Penélope Morales Peña, knew how to honor the peoples who fight with bravery and connection with nature. Adorned with sacred feathers, bones that recall the ancestors, and symbols of power, they are warriors who represent the cycle of life and the union between the earthly and spiritual world
The Guaracheros troupe, created in 1998 with a break in its activity of several years, had just arrived from Gran Canaria, where its 58 members traveled to participate in the carnival. They also performed in Tías the show Cartography of a wandering carnival, by choreographer Diego Rueda, and the fantasy A pattern of three skies, by designer Kilian Betancort.
Guaracheros aims to “break molds and offer a carnival out of the ordinary”. This was demonstrated with the pieces titled Symphonic Beat directed by Wily Morales in the batucada and under the presidency of Verónica Rueda. “Our hallmark,” they affirm, is “to show something that is not expected from a conventional carnival group”.
The Cultural Association Comparsa Sur Caliente, presided over by Pedro Vizcaíno Cabrera, has been in the carnival for 27 years and its 35 members took to the stage with the show The victory of those who never surrendered and the fantasy From the kingdom of Asgard, in colors as luminous as white, yellow, and green, along with violets and golds.
“The warriors” that make up Sur Caliente showed their experience with the choreography of Yonay Alonso, the batucada director Fran Brenes, and the costume designer, Pedro Vizcaíno Cabrera. The carnival group has won awards at the Carnival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2016, 2017, and 2025.
