Tradition, music, and feeling joined hands this Sunday in a very special morning in La Villa de Teguise. There are places that seem made for music and for preserving the memory of a people. And La Villa de Teguise is, without a doubt, one of them.
This Sunday, October 4th, on a bright morning, its streets and squares were once again filled with tradition, music, and that feeling that arises when our roots become song and dance. The protagonist was the Agrupación Folklórica Guagime from the town of Tahíche, which offered a performance full of emotion and authenticity in the very heart of the Historical and Artistic Ensemble, the Plaza de La Constitución, also popularly known as Plaza de Los Leones.
Guagime did not limit itself to performing a repertoire of our folklore. During its performance, it achieved something much more important; it made tradition feel alive again.
Every note, every voice, and every dance step seemed to bring with them memories of our elders, of those family gatherings where popular music was part of daily life and a way of understanding the Canary Islands that deserves to be preserved and passed on to new generations.
And what better setting than La Villa de Teguise.
Among its historic cobbled streets, its traditional houses, and the atmosphere of a Sunday morning, Guagime's music and dances found an exceptional setting. Visitors stopped to listen, neighbors enjoyed the show, and for a few moments, the rush was put aside to make way for our traditions.
It was a performance of those that do not end when the last song stops playing. Because what remains afterward is the feeling.
The merit of groups like Guagime lies precisely there; in keeping alive a flame that others lit before us. A flame that must continue to be passed from generation to generation so that we never forget where we come from.
The Agrupación Folklórica Guagime, linked since its origins to the Municipal Folklore School of Teguise, represents that commitment to our culture and our roots.
And this Sunday it proved it again.
La Villa de Teguise, with its extraordinary heritage and its status as a cultural benchmark of Lanzarote, became for one morning an authentic stage of the Canary Islands. And there, amidst musical chords, voices, and dances, the folklore of Lanzarote spoke to us again of our land.
It was a morning to enjoy, but also to remember.
To remember that a people that preserves its songs, its dances, and its customs also preserves an essential part of its identity.
That is why performances like Guagime's have a value that goes far beyond entertainment. They are a way of keeping our collective memory alive and telling those who come after us that our traditions do not belong to the past; they are part of who we are and who we want to continue to be.
Thank you, Guagime, for such a special morning.
Thank you for bringing the music of our land to the heart of La Villa de Teguise.
And thank you to all the people who, with their effort, their dedication, and their love for our traditions, make it possible for the Canary Islands to continue sounding like the Canary Islands.
Because as long as there are groups like Guagime, as long as there are young and old willing to sing and dance our folklore, and as long as there are places like La Villa de Teguise where our roots can be expressed, our culture will remain alive.
And this Sunday, it was demonstrated once again.
The music played
The tradition spoke.
And Teguise once again beat to the rhythm of the Canary Islands.
