The Library of the José Saramago House Museum will host next Saturday, August 15, at 7:30 p.m., the presentation of the new editions of Morgana en Esmelle and Circe o el placer del azul, the two novels by the Galician writer and journalist Begoña Caamaño, honored this year 2026 on the Día das Letras Galegas, will have free admission until full capacity is reached. The event will feature the participation of Bea Caamaño, the author's sister, and María del Río, director of the José Saramago House Museum.
The presentation will be an opportunity to rediscover the literary work of one of the most unique voices in contemporary Galician literature. Originally published in 2009 and 2012, Circe o el placer del azul and Morgana en Esmelle have returned to bookstores this year, coinciding with the institutional recognition that Galicia dedicates to Begoña Caamaño, whose career continues to arouse growing interest among new generations of readers.
Journalist, writer, and feminist activist, Begoña Caamaño (Vigo, 1964-2014) developed a significant part of her professional career at Radio Galega, where she advocated for journalism committed to rigor, public service, and social transformation. In parallel, she maintained intense activity in feminist, cultural, and social movements, convinced that both journalism and literature were tools for understanding the world and contributing to changing it.
Her narrative work consists of two novels that revisit some of the great myths of Western tradition from a profoundly contemporary and feminist perspective. In Circe o el placer del azul, Caamaño recovers the figures of Circe and Penelope to question the Homeric narrative and give prominence to women who build their own history from freedom, friendship, and desire. In Morgana en Esmelle, the author delves into the Arthurian universe to reflect on power, ethics, justice, and the possibility of building freer and more egalitarian societies.
The event will allow us to get closer not only to these two novels, but also to the human and intellectual figure of Begoña Caamaño through the testimony of Bea Caamaño, sister, friend, and representative of the writer, who will share personal memories and reflections on her literary, intellectual, and vital legacy. Alongside her, María del Río, director of the José Saramago House Museum, also a friend of the author with whom she shared a stay and the pleasure of blue in Lanzarote, will participate.
A meeting that will highlight the links between Caamaño's thought and Saramago's: the commitment to social justice, the defense of equality, critical thinking, and the conviction that literature constitutes a powerful tool for imagining other possible worlds.
The event will also have a particularly symbolic meaning, as during the presentation the official registration of the La Balsa de Piedra Foundation of Lanzarote will be publicly announced, a new cultural initiative born inspired by the literary and humanist universe of José Saramago and with the vocation of promoting projects of dialogue, cooperation, and reflection between territories united by culture.
