El Almacén Celebrates Half a Century with a Massive Exhibition Opening

El Almacén celebrates 50 years since its creation this 2024. As a result of this anniversary, last Friday the inauguration of the commemorative exhibition El Almacén, 1974-2024, was held in honor of the half century of history of this cultural space. The exhibition, organized by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, was attended by cultural figures, residents and visitors of the island.

The opening ceremony took place exactly at 7:20 p.m., just when fifty years had passed since the day that César Manrique, together with Pepe Dámaso, Yayo Fontes and Luis Ibañez began the journey of the emblematic space.

The president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, wanted to highlight the “importance of El Almacén as the cultural engine of the island and reaffirmed the institutional commitment to support contemporary artistic expressions that, in addition, highlight the recent history of the island.”

The Minister of Culture, Jesús Machín Tavío, stated that “the success of the inauguration demonstrates the interest of the people of Lanzarote in discovering and valuing our tradition in cultural and artistic matters.”

The exhibition, curated by art historian Estefanía Camejo, stands as a tribute to the rich plastic and visual trajectory of contemporary art in the region, highlighting the influence of El Almacén as a cultural epicenter during the last five decades. With a carefully curated selection of works by 60 artists from Lanzarote, the exhibition offers a retrospective and anthological look that celebrates the diversity and creativity that have characterized the local art scene.

In addition to the exhibition, a series of complementary activities were announced, including round tables with prominent local artists, talks on the evolution of art in Lanzarote, and an impressive performative presentation entitled Requiem 11.11, by the Prototekne stage group.

The guided tours of the exhibition, led by the curator Estefanía Camejo, offer a unique opportunity to explore in depth the rich historical and cultural context that surrounds El Almacén and its influence on the contemporary art scene.

The exhibition will be open to the public until June 1, 2024, with visiting hours from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free and all those interested are invited to immerse themselves in this visual journey through the history of art in Lanzarote.
