Los Buches deliver their marine offering to San Marcial del Rubicón

In the past, sailors would deposit their offerings and prayers, especially to ask for their health and a good campaign at sea.

Ofrenda marinera de Los Buches

The town of Femés is celebrating the festivities in honor of San Marcial del Rubicón. At 7:00 p.m. last Sunday, and once the Eucharist was over, which was presided over by the parish priest of Yaiza, Yonathan Almeida, the image of the Patron Saint of Lanzarote and Co-patron of the Diocese of the Canary Islands, San Marcial del Rubicón, passed through the portico of the church to receive the marine offering of the Parranda de los Buches. The current management of the group wanted to rescue this tradition, which is recorded in written and oral testimonies from when the ancient city of Rubicón stood on the south coast of the island of Lanzarote.

The devotion to San Marcial del Rubicón has been fundamental for sailors, both from Lanzarote and those who arrived on these coasts in search of water and supplies. The sailors went to Femés to deposit their offerings and raise their prayers to San Marcial every year, especially to ask for their health and a good campaign at sea with a safe return home.

The marine offering began with the participation of Darío, a young member of the Parranda de Buches, who recited a poem composed by him. Next, the oldest member, the honorary former president Paulino García, participated, accompanied by Tiago Rodríguez, the youngest. Both placed a wreath of flowers at the foot of the image of San Marcial del Rubicón. After that, the musical and dance offering began, directed in the musical part by Professor Roberto Gil and in the dance body by Rubén Valiente.

The Parranda Marinera de Buches offered a repertoire with a marine flavor with well-known songs such as: Chiquilla Mía, Niña Bonita, Vals Marinero, Sorondongo de los Navegantes, Isa and Folias. This performance was highly applauded by the public that had gathered at the church's souk to be able to shelter from the prevailing wind.

The offering was presided over by the parish priest of Yaiza, Yonathan Almeida, as well as by Daniel Medina, Councilor for Festivities of the Yaiza City Council, and Juan Antonio Machado, president of the Parranda Marinera de Buches. With the applause and cheers to San Marcial del Rubicón, this marine offering was concluded.
