The Association of Oncohematological Families of Lanzarote A.F.O.L. celebrated the VIII Short Story and Micro-Story Contest 'Living with Cancer' on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
The event took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Agustín de la Hoz House of Culture in Arrecife. More and more young people and adults are participating, some of them narrating very personal stories that they have lived and are living in their own families.
The jury of this edition was made up of Carmen Ramón Villalba, María Dolores Rodríguez Armas and Rafael Montero Morán, who, after reading and reviewing each of the stories and micro-stories received, unanimously decided on the winners.
In the Youth category, the first prize, valued at 200 euros and a diploma, went to Sara Blanco Izquierdo with the title The Tree of Hope, while the second prize valued at 100 euros and a diploma went to Hugo de León San Ginés with the title The Echo of His Arm. For its part, in the Adult category, the first prize valued at 400 euros and a diploma went to Laura Freitas Pérez with the title Captain Green Coat, and the second prize valued at 200 euros went to Roberto Tejera de León with the title The Good Side of Things.
One more year, the Rotary Club of Lanzarote collaborated by contributing the economic part of the awards, whose check was given to the winners by the president Pedro Botella Torres. The event was closed by the president of A.F.O.L., Carmen Arrocha Hernández, addressing the public that once again completed the allowed capacity.
"In this VIII Contest, we realize that this disease is still difficult to cope with, but by expressing feelings, insecurities, beliefs, uprooting, we fight because it is part of our lives. In addition, young people reflect, become aware because their support and solidarity is essential to continue training as people and be able to empathize every moment," Arrocha declared.
"Therefore, we continue to propose as an objective to offer this writing space, where narration takes place to tell the essence that dwells in our being because sometimes words prevent us from expressing them. For A.F.O.L. your participation will always be a success because everyone makes us reflect on the way we see and understand life. We thank the teachers of IES Costa Teguise for their participation and the rest of the island's IES, who see how important it is to encourage students to write and participate and invite their friends and family," the president continued.
In addition, during the event it was revealed that "next year we will expand this contest to the island of Fuerteventura and thus we will incorporate the rest of the Canary Islands. Inform you that we will make the book of this contest in paper and digital mode through the following website".
The event was attended by the mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Yonathan de León, the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Cathaysa Suárez and the Councilor for Public Works of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina.
