The Provincial Court tries a defendant accused of stabbing a man to death after an argument in Lanzarote

The argument between the two began over the theft of a mobile phone days earlier. The Prosecutor's Office is seeking thirteen years in prison and 65,000 euros in compensation for the accused

The Second Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will begin the jury selection this Monday, November 24, to commence the oral trial this Tuesday, November 25, against a man accused of killing another with a serrated knife in Playa Blanca (Yaiza).

The events date back to July 25, 2023. According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, the accused M.E.M. was allegedly walking around a cafeteria located on Correillo street, in the tourist town of Yaiza.On the terrace of this establishment was the victim, with whom he had had a prior argument and whom he accused of having stolen his mobile phone.As a result of this discussion, the Public Prosecutor's Office accuses M.E.M. of allegedly delivering three stab wounds with a 22-centimeter serrated knife to the victim, who died from these stab wounds. Specifically, he allegedly inflicted one stab wound to the left lobe, another to the right parasternal region, and the last to the left flank of the abdomen.

The accused has been in provisional prison since July 27, 2023. Meanwhile, the victim was 40 years old when he died, was single and childless, with his mother being the sole heir. 

The Prosecutor's Office accuses M.E.M. of committing a homicide offense and requests a prison sentence of thirteen years for the defendant, absolute disqualification during the term of the sentence, and payment of court costs. Additionally, in terms of civil liability, it requests that he compensate the victim's mother with 65,000 euros for the moral damages caused.
