A popular jury has declared Lieutenant General of the Guardia Civil Pedro Vázquez Jarava guilty of a bribery offense for favoring the Lanzarote businessman Ángel Ramón Tejera de León, known as 'Mon', in the contracting of works in different commands of the armed institute. This has been reported by the newspaper El País.
Both have been sentenced to one year in prison. The Public Prosecutor's Office, the State Attorney's Office, and the popular prosecutions maintained the request for one year in prison for both. For Vázquez Jarava, as a high-ranking official of the armed institute, for facilitating works in facilities of the armed institute to the Canarian businessman Tejera de León in exchange for gifts such as trips or money transfers.
Tejera's companies obtained contracts from the armed institute for approximately 1.4 million euros due to the friendship between the two. The convicted individuals have informed that they will appeal the verdict.
For its part, the Unified Association of Guardia Civil (AUGC), which acted as popular prosecution in the case, has welcomed the guilty verdict and has pointed out that it is "an unprecedented event" as it is "the first time that a commander of this rank has been tried and declared guilty of corruption in the history of the Guardia Civil".
The association has demanded "more transparency and real controls" from the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil. "The vast majority of Guardia Civil officers serve with honesty every day, and deserve that the institution purges itself when a commander betrays that trust, whatever their rank," they have maintained.
Update. Pending Expansion.
