Lanzarote will have the University Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport, a new higher education qualification linked to a strategic sector for the Island, starting in September 2027.

The Degree in Nautical Science and Maritime Transport is among the qualifications with the best salary and job prospects in the Spanish university landscape, according to data recently published by El País.

According to this information, after four years of working, the average contribution per worker in maritime transport services (excluding supplements) was 35,000 euros in 2018, a salary at the top of the scale, on par with IT (34,300) and slightly lower than Medicine (39,700), according to the latest cross-referenced data from the Spanish Social Security and universities. A logistics center manager can earn between 50,000 and 70,000 euros annually.

The introduction of these studies will represent a significant advance for the university offerings of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, as it will allow access to quality higher education without the need to travel to other islands or the mainland.

Lanzarote Fishing School

The proposal contemplates that the classes will be held at the Maritime-Fishing Vocational Training Polytechnic Institute of the Canary Islands (Fishing School), in Arrecife, a center with more than 70 years of experience in nautical and maritime training that already has high-level facilities, adapted to host this university teaching.

Among its infrastructures are navigation simulators, specialized laboratories, its own vessels, technological classrooms, and a residence with capacity for 120 students.

The initiative stems from the fact that Lanzarote has the necessary conditions to become a benchmark for nautical training in the Canary Islands thanks to its maritime tradition, its strategic position, and the existence of already prepared infrastructures.

The implementation of the Degree would also reinforce the Island's commitment to strategic sectors linked to the sea, logistics, maritime transport, and the blue economy, also contributing to economic diversification in a territory historically marked by its strong dependence on tourism.

University Foundation of Lanzarote and La Graciosa

The University Foundation of Lanzarote considers that the development of higher education linked to the maritime-port sector will allow the generation of new professional opportunities, attract talent, and favor economic activity associated with sectors with international projection.

This Foundation, which has just opened its headquarters in the center of Arrecife, maintains intense activity aimed at expanding and improving the offer of higher education on the Island.

Among its objectives is to facilitate the access of the population of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to new university degrees, foster collaboration with universities and research centers, and promote training projects linked to strategic sectors for the economic and social development of the Island.

In addition, the University Foundation works to promote an educational industry that allows attracting international students to the island and offering new higher education opportunities to the resident population.
