The ULPGC is positioned as the first Spanish university in the field of Oceanography and ranks 34th internationally, climbing more than 20 positions compared to last year, according to the 2026 Shanghai Ranking, which annually classifies universities worldwide by academic subjects.
The Oceanographic Sciences area of the ULPGC is thus consolidated as a teaching and scientific field of international recognition. Indeed, the Faculty of Marine Sciences of the ULPGC was the first center in Spain to offer these university studies.
Furthermore, the ULPGC's Institutes EcoAqua and IOCAG, both from the marine area, host a large number of internationally relevant scientific research, leading projects on aquaculture, oceanographic climate change, or marine ecosystems.
This year's subject ranking also highlights the ULPGC's position in the fields of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. Specifically, Veterinary studies rank in the 9-12 band among Spanish universities and are placed between 151-200 internationally. In Agricultural Sciences, the ULPGC reaches a position among the top 10-14 in Spain and is among the top 201-300 universities in the world.
The Shanghai subject ranking is produced each edition evaluating approximately 2,000 universities worldwide. The number of universities included and ranked in this ranking varies depending on the number of institutions worldwide that offer studies or conduct research in each specific field. Thus, while some subjects have a ranking of up to 500 universities, in others the ranking includes only the top 100 universities.
