The Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, headed by Migdalia Machín, will for the first time include students of higher artistic education taught in public centers among the beneficiaries of the regional scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The measure expands the scope of these grants and recognizes these degrees as part of higher education, in line with current regulations. Thus, students from centers such as music conservatories or the acting school will be able to apply for them.
This initiative responds to the vision with which the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture was created, integrating higher education, research, innovation, and culture into a single public action strategy aimed at generating opportunities, fostering talent, and contributing to the development of the Canary Islands. From this perspective, the department promotes coordinated policies that facilitate access to knowledge and strengthen student opportunities.
The Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, stated that "we want any student to be able to develop their educational project regardless of the path they choose. The inclusion of higher artistic education in this call means recognizing its value within higher education and continuing to move towards a system of grants that expands opportunities and connects training, creation, and knowledge in the service of the Canary Islands".
The expansion will allow students pursuing higher artistic education in public centers to access these scholarships, supporting disciplines linked to creation and culture. The measure responds to the provisions of article 4 of Law 1/2024, of June 7, which recognizes the equivalence of these degrees with university studies.
The inclusion of these degrees is part of the set of improvements promoted for the 2026/2027 call by the Ministry of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands. Among the new features are the increase of the residence-linked grant to 3,000 euros, the update of income and asset thresholds to expand access to public grants, and the inclusion of these studies in the regional scholarship system.
