The Atlantic Society of Oceanographers has awarded the Oceans 2026 Award in the Education category to the Polytechnic Institute of Maritime-Fisheries Vocational Training in the Canary Islands, popularly known as the Lanzarote Fishing School.

These awards are given each year to entities and professionals who stand out for their contribution to the knowledge, conservation, and sustainable development of the oceans, as reported this Wednesday in a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty.

The Oceans 2026 Awards also recognized researcher Cristina Romera Castillo, in the individual category; SEO/BirdLife, in the NGO Collectives category; and AZTI Tecnalia, in the Business-Institution category.

The Lanzarote Fishing School was inaugurated in 1943 and its training offer covers specialties related to coastal navigation and fishing, maritime transport, organization of ship and vessel machinery maintenance, as well as safety and emergencies at sea.

The director of the educational center, attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Carmen Déniz, received this award last Sunday, June 7, during an event held at the Real Club Victoria in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on the eve of the commemoration of World Oceans Day.

During her speech, Déniz valued the close collaboration of the institute with the professional sector and with other institutions. In this regard, she highlighted that this relationship "has always been very open" and has allowed the center to "feel very close to the maritime-fishing sector and its needs, even though it is located on a non-capital island".

The Director General of Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Esteban Reyes, considered this distinction as "a recognition of the commitment, trajectory, and contribution of the center to the training of generations of professionals who perform a fundamental role for the economic and social development of the Canary Islands".
