Venice will charge a tax to tourists who do not stay overnight in the city

Starting next spring, those who visit Venice for the day will have to pay a new fee of five euros per person. Those who stay overnight in the city will not have to pay it since the tourist tax is applied to them through the invoice in their accommodations.

The measure will be applied experimentally to visitors over 14 years of age and excludes residents of the Veneto region, their families, and students.

The new fee will be introduced on a trial basis between April 25 and May 5, the days when the influx to the Adriatic city is greatest.

Later, it will be charged on weekends until July 14, with the exception of the one that coincides with the Italian Republic Day (June 1 and 2).

The "access contribution", as the city council of the Italian city calls it, will be mandatory between 8.30 and 16.00 hours. Those who do not pay may receive a penalty between 50 and 300 euros.

To ensure payment, the council will receive data from sensors responsible for counting people, from the issuance of tickets in museums and maritime traffic.
