From Thursday, April 25, travelers visiting Venice for the day will have to pay a new fee of five euros per person. Those who stay overnight in the city already pay a tourist tax through their accommodations.
The measure will be applied experimentally to visitors over 14 years of age and excludes students, as well as residents of the Veneto region and their families.
The new fee will be introduced on a trial basis between April 25 and May 5, on the days when the influx to the Adriatic city is greatest.
Later it will be charged on weekends until July 14, with the exception of the one that coincides with the Italian Republic Day (June 1 and 2).
The initiative will not include turnstiles. In 2018, they were tested to regulate access flows, but they lasted only a few minutes as they were torn down by a group of protesters.
Now those in charge of controlling the entrance will be municipal guards who may ask for the reservation code at the main access points.
The "access contribution", as the city council of the Italian city calls it, will be mandatory between 8.30 and 16.00 hours. Those who do not pay may receive a penalty between 50 and 300 euros.
