The Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has taken a new step in the modernization of the island's main tourist destinations with the tender for the drafting of the Modernization Plan, Improvement and Increase of Tourist Competitiveness of Playa Blanca and the Third Modernization Plan of Costa Teguise, once the prior administrative processing has been completed and the management assignment with the Government of the Canary Islands has been formalized. The contracting is carried out through an open procedure and urgent processing, with a global investment of 600,000 euros.
With this action, the Cabildo assumes the technical direction of both territorial planning processes, while the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water of the Government of the Canary Islands will continue with the processing and final approval of the documents, in accordance with the management assignment authorized by both administrations.
The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighted that this step "means turning into facts the work developed in recent months between the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands to provide Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise with planning instruments adapted to the current reality". "We are entering a decisive phase. We are no longer talking about administrative procedures, but about the start of the drafting of documents that will define how we want Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise to evolve in the coming years. Our objective is to have rigorous planning, adapted to the reality of both centers and capable of responding to the current challenges of the destination," said the president.
For his part, the Minister of Territorial Planning and Territorial Policy, Jesús Machín, explained that the tender will allow the formation of specialized multidisciplinary teams that will develop both plans in the coming months. "Now the technical work begins. We want to have specialized teams that develop two sound plans from an urban planning, environmental, and economic point of view, incorporating solutions that allow for the improvement of public spaces, mobility, tourist activity, and urban quality in both centers," indicated Machín.
The tender documents contemplate the complete elaboration of both plans, including all the necessary technical, legal, economic, and environmental studies, as well as technical assistance throughout the administrative processing. In the case of Playa Blanca, the document must previously define the scope of action, taking into account the legal and urbanistic situation of the municipality to guarantee the viability of the proposals incorporated into the future plan.
The new Modernization Plans aim to update the planning of both tourist centers, promote the renovation of accommodation establishments and complementary services, improve public spaces, strengthen infrastructure and facilities, promote sustainable mobility, and consolidate a tourism model of greater quality and competitiveness. In Playa Blanca, furthermore, the new document will provide an urban planning instrument adapted to the current regulatory framework after the partial annulment of the previous planning.
