Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni Dramma giocoso in due atti is the original title with which this work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was premiered, with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, at the Prague Theater on October 29, 1787. This opera narrates the adventures and misadventures of Don Giovanni, a conceited, arrogant, manipulative and unscrupulous seducer, who does and undoes as he pleases until he comes face to face with someone he cannot defeat.
The Centers for Art, Culture and Tourism are making their debut in the opera genre with Don Giovanni, one of the most performed in the world. It will be this Saturday, August 17, in the Jameos del Agua Auditorium, starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Entity's counselor, Ángel Vázquez, the tenor from Lanzarote, Pancho Corujo, and the musical and stage directors, Fernando Briones and Teresa Garzón, respectively, have explained the most relevant details and the progress of the latest preparations for this premiere.
Vázquez has encouraged the island's population to participate in "a magnificent opportunity to delve into an exciting genre with a top-level cast led by Pancho Corujo." For the counselor, "the performance of Don Giovanni reflects our commitment to culture and to those who are responsible for making culture."
Pancho Corujo, for his part, was especially "happy to perform in a place where I have so many ties and memories as Jameos del Agua." The tenor from Lanzarote wanted to thank "the support" of the Tourist Centers for bringing to the island "the great spectacle of music, the representation of human emotions through singing and theatrical representation."
"I am especially excited to be in charge of the musical direction of this new production of Don Giovanni, designed specifically for Jameos del Agua, for many reasons. First, for being able to count on a cast of top-level artists, fantastic as singers but also as actors; for having the Gaos Orchestra, which has just turned 15 years old and is its second visit to Lanzarote, and for working side by side with whom I am sure will become one of the most brilliant stage directors of the coming years, Teresa Garzón Barla," said the musical director of the play, Fernando Briones.
For her part, Teresa Garzón assured that the characteristics that have been given to make this Don Giovanni seem "unbeatable" to her. "Starting with an unbeatable cast of voices, an amazing place, such as Los Jameos del Agua, and accompanied by the great maestro Briones. I couldn't have dreamed of a more powerful human team," she added.
Finally, the baritone Borja Quiza and Don Giovanni in this work, assured that this production "is a milestone in the history of Lanzarote. The first time an opera is performed in one of the most special spaces I have seen in my life. In addition, the young stage director Teresa Garzón Barla has been able to take advantage of the uniqueness of the auditorium with a lot of ideas that will make the Jameos vibrate like never before," he said.
There are still tickets left to enjoy the event at the link. The Tourist Centers offer the possibility of purchasing the ticket with a cocktail to extend the evening in that magical place.
Don Giovanni
Based on the original work El burlador de Sevilla y convidado de piedra, by Tirso de Molina, this masterpiece mixes comedy, action, melodrama and supernatural elements. Inspired by the myth of Don Juan, Don Giovanni reaches its maximum expression thanks to the dialectic between the comic and the tragic, as well as the ambivalence between the erotic sensuality and the sacred aura that surround its music.
Accompanied by the renowned Gaos Orchestra under the direction of Fernando L. Briones, the Jameos del Agua Auditorium will become a gala stage for a performance whose cast includes artists of the stature of Borja Quiza (Don Giovanni), Gerardo Bullón (Leporello), Sofía Esparza (Donna Anna), Ruth Terán (Donna Elvira), Pancho Corujo (Don Ottavio), Carolina Moncada (Zerlina), Borja Molina (Masetto) and David Cervera (Commendatore).
The stage direction, choreography and costumes, by Teresa Garzón Barla, promise a spectacular staging.
