The National Police has estimated that more than 20,000 people, 50,000 according to the organizers, took to the streets of Palma de Mallorca this Sunday to protest against mass tourism on the island, the fall in salaries, the loss of quality of life, traffic jams on roads and beaches, noise, consumption of the territory and the price of housing and rent.
This is the second major demonstration of these characteristics after the one held on May 25, which brought together 10,000 people.
The protest, "Let's change course, let's put limits on tourism", began at 7:00 p.m., went through the main streets and ended in the city center. It has been organized by the platform 'Less Tourism, More Life', which has been joined by some 110 entities, groups and social movements of Mallorca.
The demonstration, in the middle of the tourist season, with thousands of tourists arriving every day in the Balearic Islands to enjoy the sun and its beaches, wants to be "a turning point, a wake-up call, and the beginning of actions and mobilizations in the four islands, not only in Mallorca, which will extend beyond the summer", explained the spokesman of this platform, Pere Joan Femenia.
"The objective of this protest is to change course, people are fed up with an economic model that does not take into account the problems that tourism causes to residents", he explained.
