The Lanzarote Tourism Federation (FTL) has closed a new year marked by important advances in its "Sustainable Companies" project, which now has a total of 102 affiliated companies from the tourism sector in Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The main objective of the project is to accompany and advise companies in the development and implementation of their sustainability plans, aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Canary Islands 2030 Agenda, and facilitate their transition towards decarbonization.

"Sustainable Companies" is aligned with the Biosphere Sustainable Lifestyle methodology, designed by the Institute for Responsible Tourism and endorsed by the Lanzarote destination.

Thanks to this initiative, the certification of 28 companies has been achieved, while 54 have formally committed to sustainability and are making significant progress, and 21 have started the process to implement their plans.

Regarding the distribution of companies by activity segments, 25% corresponds to accommodation activities, 25% to sports and nature activities, 18% to tourist transport, 11% to hospitality and amusement parks, 7% to museums and 3% to travel agencies.

In addition to advising and accompanying companies in the development and implementation of their individualized Sustainability Plans, the FTL has provided support to 10 companies in the sector for the creation of their own Circularity Plans in collaboration with La Buena Huella.

Through the Sustainable Companies Service, companies are also facilitated and helped to measure their Carbon Footprint using the Journey to Decarbonization tool, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands.

The work of the FTL during 2024 has included the promotion and participation in workshops and conferences on sustainability, circularity and measurement of the Carbon Footprint, as well as educational actions in schools on food waste.

"Sustainability is the fundamental axis of our commitment to Lanzarote and La Graciosa. We want these islands and their business fabric to become an example of how tourism can contribute to balanced development, which guarantees the quality of life of its residents, the well-being of visitors and the conservation of natural heritage for future generations," said the president of the Lanzarote Tourism Federation, Susana Pérez.
