Overnight stays in hotel establishments increased by 1.86% in May compared to the same month in 2025 in the Canary Islands, going from 5,344,403 to 5,444,114, an increase of 99,711, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
This increase was the result of the accumulation of more overnight stays in said establishments on the islands by foreign visitors, which went from 4,500,856 to 4,603,280 from May to May, even compensating for the slight decrease that, conversely, occurred in those added by customers residing in national territory, from 843,547 to 840,834, according to the latest Hotel Tourism Situation study prepared by the INE.
This rise in the number of nights spent, in total, by foreign tourists also mitigated a slight decrease recorded in the average stay of each user of the archipelago's hotels, which in the fifth month of 2026 was 5.85 days, compared to 6.01 a year earlier, according to INE figures.
Data that show that the increase in hotel overnight stays in the Canary Islands was determined by an increase in the number of travelers who used these accommodations in May, which were 929,918, when in the same month of 2025 they had been 889,987.
The occupancy rate per bed in said establishments decreased, in any case, from May to May, going from 66.39% to 64.98%, although this decrease was contributed to by the fact that during that period the number of operational hotels on the islands increased, from 571 to 607.
And in parallel, the total number of employees by all of them also increased, from 58,766 workers in the fifth month of 2025 to 61,468 in that of 2026, according to the aforementioned Hotel Tourism Situation report.
