Lanzarote, the favorite island for cyclists

Tourists who practice cycling spent 20.4% more on complementary services, Lanzarote receives more than Tenerife and Gran Canaria combined

La Geria Cycling Route

Lanzarote is the island of the Canary archipelago that receives the most tourists annually to practice cycling. Last year there were more than 176,000 cyclists, more than double those who went to Tenerife (84,000) or Gran Canaria (83,000).

The sports tourist spends more and in a better distributed way, makes more trips per year, with a longer stay than the conventional tourist and also repeats in 88% of the cases. Nearly 60% of tourists who practice cycling earn more than 50,000 euros per year, 10 points more than the average tourist.

Tourists who came to tour the islands by bicycle in 2022 spent 13.3% more on accommodation and 20.4% more on complementary services than the average of all tourists in general (including cyclists). Their stays were on average 1.3 days longer.

If 47.8% of tourists arrive in the Canary Islands with a vacation package, which reduces the chances of them spending in other establishments away from the hotel, in the case of bicycle tourists, that percentage is reduced to 38.7%.

Practicing cycling during their vacations in the archipelago is particularly popular among Germans, who represent 16% of tourism in the Canary Islands, but account for 20% of cyclists.

Also among the Irish, who account for 3.8% of tourism in general, but 7.5% among those who practice cycling. Belgians and Danes also occupy a higher percentage among bicycle tourists, above their weight in the general tourism data.
