Tourist spending in Lanzarote during the third quarter of 2024 has reached record figures, totaling 1,027 million euros, which represents 18.8% of the total tourist spending in the Canary Islands. These data, extracted from the Survey on Tourist Spending of the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), reflect a notable growth compared to the previous quarter, with a variation of 30.6%, and an interannual increase of 9.1%.
The average spending per tourist per day in Lanzarote stood at 191.7 euros this quarter, exceeding both the values of the previous quarters of 2024 and those of the same period in 2023, an increase that positions Lanzarote as the Canary Island with the highest average daily spending per tourist, in addition to marking the highest level in the historical series of this indicator since 2010.
“This achievement confirms the effectiveness of the destination requalification strategy promoted by the Cabildo”, considers the president of the Island Corporation, Oswaldo Betancort, highlighting that this increase in tourist spending on our island “is excellent news, since it goes beyond the mere influx of visitors and reflects the success of our commitment to a more sustainable tourism model, and to the requalification of the destination promoting quality tourism”.
Betancort adds that “the fact that Lanzarote leads the average daily spending per tourist in the third quarter of 2024 is a sign of the confidence of visitors in the offer and quality of the services offered. We do not want mass tourism, but tourism that values our culture, our environment and that contributes to the well-being of the entire island”.
Breakdown by expenses
The breakdown of expenses reveals that tourists who arrived in Lanzarote in the third quarter of this year allocated 43.9% of their budget to accommodation (84.2 euros), followed by 29.4% to transport (56.3 euros), 5.2% to local transport (9.9 euros), 13.1% to food (25.1 euros), 4.5% to recreational, cultural and sports activities (8.6 euros), 3% to shopping (5.7 euros) and 1% to other expenses (2 euros).
Especially noteworthy is the increase in the shopping item, with an increase of 39.42% between the second and third quarters of 2024, equivalent to an additional expense of 1.62 euros per tourist per day. This increase underlines the attractiveness of Lanzarote's commercial offer, which continues to diversify and adapt to the new demands of the tourist market.
