Last year, German tourism experienced a slight growth compared to the previous year, with a total of 275,684 tourists arriving from German airports, which is equivalent to 3% more than those who arrived in 2023 when they amounted to 267,279 people.
However, the numbers are still far from those reached before the pandemic. Ten years ago, Lanzarote received almost 325,000 Germans a year. That is, 50,000 more travelers.
Gone are the days when half a million people arrived from Germany every year in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 1999, 516,655 people, a record year, arrived in Lanzarote from German airports.
The decline has been so great that in recent years Ireland, meanwhile, has consolidated itself as the second most important foreign market for Lanzarote to the detriment of the German market.
To give an idea of the magnitude of the transformation, in the last year there were as many Irish tourists as the sum of German and Italian tourists.
Germans visit Lanzarote mainly during the coldest months in Germany. That is, between November and March, while visits are reduced by half during the spring and summer, seasons in which Germany enjoys many sunny days, unlike the Atlantic markets, which are much more regular throughout the year given their climatology.
