Lanzarote loses leadership in Canary tourist apartments in December

The island of volcanoes ceases to be the most desired Canary Island for tourist apartments in December, after having led since the end of the pandemic

Last month, Canary Islands was the preferred destination for apartments, with more than 2.4 million overnight stays and an increase of 6.6% compared to December of 2024. 

It also had the highest occupancy among the autonomous communities, with 82% of the apartments offered, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in its latest survey on the matter. 

But if we break it down by tourist areas, Gran Canaria was the preferred destination, with more than 945 thousand overnight stays and also presented the highest occupancy rate, of 84.6%. Lanzarote came in second place with 83.6%. 

Lanzarote had been the first in occupation most of the winter months in previous years and especially in December. 

The last month of the year, Lanzarote had been the leader both in 2024 with an occupancy of 82.03%, followed by Gran Canaria with 81.4% as in 2023, when the tourist apartments on the island of volcanoes registered an 85.01% occupancy. Tenerife was then second with 83.35%. 

In the set of Spain, overnight stays in tourist apartments increased by 9.4% in December. Those of residents increased by 4.6% and those of non-residents by 11.0%

The average stay decreased by 1.8%, to 5.0 overnight stays per traveler.

In December, 33.7% of the offered spots were occupied, 5.6% more than in the same month of 2024. The occupancy rate by spots on weekends was 37.2%, 3.4% more75.2% of overnight stays were made by non-resident travelers. The United Kingdom was the main issuing market, with 26.7% of the total
