The tourist tax is regulated in Galicia through a regional law that recognizes the capacity of municipalities to impose a tax on tourist overnight stays.

Coruña was the first to introduce it last Monday, September 29, while Santiago de Compostela started this Wednesday, October 1.

In both cities, the tourist tax will range between 1 and 2.5 euros per night depending on the category of accommodation.

There will be exceptions. Among others, those attending congresses or training activities, minors, hospitalized persons and their companions, federated athletes in official competition, persons with a disability greater than 65%, and participants in social reception or emergency programs will not have to pay it.

The establishments will pay the fee through a digital platform through two annual self-assessments: between 1 and 20 July, the fees corresponding to the first semester will be paid, and between 1 and 20 January, those corresponding to the second semester of the year.

Both measures are judicialized. In Santiago, the Compostela Hotel Union filed an administrative litigation appeal for its suspension, but the Superior Court of Justice of Galicia has denied it because it does not appreciate that there is "an immediate or evident economic damage to the sector."

In Coruña, this Tuesday, an appeal has also been filed by the Business Association of Lodging (Hospeco), the Provincial Association of Hotel Businessmen of A Coruña and the shipping agent Rubine e Hijos, but they clarify that they comply with it, pending the judicial decision.
