The Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa and the island Council have held this week a pioneering conference in the Canary Islands that has brought together professionals from the video game industry and the tourism sector with the aim of exploring new opportunities for promotion, innovation, and creation of tourist experiences adapted to the new times.
The meeting is part of the “ImpulsaTech Lanzarote” program (Comprehensive Program for Technological Dynamization and Training of Coworking Digital Lanzarote), financed by the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa for the dynamization and promotion of the technology sector on the island.
The president of the Chamber of Commerce of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, José Valle, was in charge of welcoming the attendees and opening the institutional and technical working group. During his speech, Valle stressed the importance of opening new avenues of convergence between industries: “Digital entertainment represents a strategic opportunity to diversify our promotion model and interact with new generations of travelers.
"From the Chamber, we are certain that technological training and applied innovation are fundamental tools to reinforce the competitiveness of our companies and generate high added value in Lanzarote and La Graciosa”.
For her part, the Minister of Economic Promotion of the Cabildo de Lanzarote y La Graciosa, Nori Machín, highlighted the value of the public-private alliance at the island level: “Through the “ImpulsaTech Lanzarote” program, the Cabildo reaffirms its firm commitment to technological talent and the digital transformation of our economy".
"Uniting for the first time two sectors of such importance as tourism and technology opens a range of real possibilities to retain knowledge, diversify productive activity, and position Lanzarote at the forefront of digital solutions in the Canary Islands,” added Machín.
Digital entertainment as a tourism driver
The conference hosted a dialogue session focused on the convergence of both sectors, which included the participation of David Carmona, president of the Canary Association of Video Game Developers (ACADEVI); Antonio Cabrera, director of A1M Entertainment; Yurena Escobar, founder of Flecher.Co; Carlos Barrios, founder and director of Infinity VR; and Sara Sánchez, director of Digital & Social Media at Tourism of the Canary Islands.
During the colloquium, Sara Sánchez detailed the virtual experience developed by Turismo de Islas Canarias on the international platform Roblox, an innovative endeavor that allows the promotion of the archipelago's attractions among millions of users through immersive and interactive environments.
The second block of the program addressed the impact of video games as a cultural and loyalty channel. Aday Melián, director of Daydream Software and creator of the video game “Risko - Shepherd’s Lead,” inspired by the Canarian tradition of the salto del pastor (shepherd's leap), explained how indigenous creative developments act as authentic ambassadors of Canarian heritage and identity in the global market.
Subsequently, Christopher Vegas, head of marketing and communication at Rising Pixel, analyzed the application of gamification in accommodation establishments, showing how the use of digital playful mechanics contributes to enriching the guest's stay and increasing tourist loyalty.
As a complement to the session, attendees were able to learn firsthand about a showcase of the main Canarian video game projects currently in the development phase, highlighting the technical and creative potential of the islands.
