The number of trips made by residents in the Canary Islands fell by 33% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2025, going from 1,441,843 to 963,122, which is 478,721 fewer, according to data published this Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
The inhabitants of Spain, as a whole, made 33.2 million trips in the first quarter, a 4.4% decrease compared to a year ago, according to the latest Resident Tourism Survey prepared by the INE.
From 2025 to 2026, the number of residents in Spanish territory who traveled with the Canary Islands as a destination between January and March also decreased, going from 1,378,432 to 879,081, it reveals.
And the spending made by them, as a whole, in the islands was also lower, standing at 435.9 million euros, compared to the 492.2 million euros it had reached a year earlier.
The average disbursement of each of these visitors in the archipelago, however, grew, going from 357 euros to 496 euros.
On the other hand, the spending made in their destinations by residents of the Canary Islands who traveled from January to March decreased compared to the same months of 2025, from 574.1 to 472.6 million euros.
The average spending of each of them, however, rose, from 398 to 491 euros, according to INE figures.
