Tourist accommodations expect to reach full recovery this summer, but many of them have already begun to exceed the figures of 2019 in some indicators.

Without going any further, staying overnight already costs 14 euros more than before the pandemic, with a price of 86.67 euros per night, compared to 72.77 euros in 2019, which has led them to earn, together with good occupancy data, almost four million euros more, according to the Tourist Accommodation Survey of the ISTAC, collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.

Specifically, staying in hotels costs 98.30 euros per night and in apartments 58.37, about 40 euros less on average in the latter. Although the average daily rate falls in May as usual, being a time of limbo between the Easter and summer holidays, this indicator has managed to cope with the decrease in the places offered (61,457), in overnight stays (1,279,350) and in the number of tourists staying (210,793).

In any case, although the price has increased, occupancy has not been affected, with 75.46% in May, 3 points more than in the same period of 2019. In addition, in terms of total income, these also decrease by 10 million in a month, with 50,587,445 euros, but manage to exceed the gains before the pandemic, which were 46.6 million.

A striking figure, considering that there are currently 73 fewer accommodations, since in the same period of 2019 there were 285 establishments open. Therefore, it could be translated that the increase in income is a direct consequence of the increase in the price of the average daily rate of hotels and apartments and the maintained occupancy.

Employment falls short due to extra-hotel accommodations

However, employment in the tourist accommodation sector has fallen short of recovery, even taking into account the good data on affiliations to Social Security.

In May, 9,686 workers were registered, of which 7,848 belonged to hotels and 1,838 to apartments, a figure that is close to that of 2019, when there were 9,994, but fails to improve it.

This has been a direct consequence of the decrease in the number of workers in extra-hotel accommodations, which mark a figure of 1,838, compared to 2,191 employees in 2019. In any case, employment is on an upward trend, so it may reach pre-pandemic numbers in the summer.
