The difficulty in accessing a home in the Canary Islands has become a structural problem, aggravated by public administrations that have gone years without building a single official protection housing unit on the islands.
Meanwhile, the territory coexists with the paradox of accounting for more than 211,400 empty homes throughout the archipelago according to the latest data from the INE compiled by the Observatory of Social Rights of the Canary Islands (Odesocan).
Lanzarote has 19,986 empty homes out of a total of 79,092, placing it at the forefront of residential underutilization in the Canary Islands, ahead of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. This figure exacerbates the shortage of supply and the increase in prices for the local population.
The analysis by the National Statistics Institute (INE), based on electricity consumption from meters, reveals critical situations in the south of the island. Tías leads the problem with 8,273 unoccupied homes out of 17,243 registered (48%), followed by Yaiza, where 30.2% of its 10,360 properties remain uninhabited (3,131 homes).
In the capital, Arrecife has 3,114 empty homes out of 25,339 (12.3%), making it the non-capital island capital with the largest stock of unoccupied properties. The phenomenon extends throughout the rest of the island: Teguise has 2,374 uninhabited homes (21.2%), San Bartolomé 1,538 (18.1%), and Haría 1,134 (29.2%). Tinajo is the only municipality with fewer than a thousand, with 422 closed homes (16.2%).
On a regional level, Lanzarote accounts for 9.5% of the more than 211,400 empty homes in the Canary Islands, where one in five properties lacks regular residents. The island is only behind Tenerife (92,300) and Gran Canaria (65,900), surpassing Fuerteventura (14,500), La Palma (12,000), La Gomera (4,900), and El Hierro (1,680).
In the urban areas of the archipelago, Arrecife's 3,114 empty homes double the figures for Santa Cruz de La Palma (1,611) or Puerto del Rosario (1,567), placing it behind the major hubs of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (24,822), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (16,729), La Laguna (9,980), and Telde (5,390).
