Given the escalation of prices and the shortage of housing, publicly subsidized housing promotions are once again taking center stage and public administrations at all levels are announcing plans and promotions, but it is a matter that takes time and takes time to bear fruit, especially after years of neglect by the administrations.
The Canary Islands are a good example of this. According to data on definitive qualifications from the Ministry of Housing, in 2023 there was not a single home with this status in the archipelago.
And it was not the only year, the Canary Islands also did not report any social housing in 2018, 2020 or 2021. In total, in the last decade, the Canary archipelago has added a total of 660 social housing units.
But it was not always like this. In the 1990s, the archipelago added 19,141 social housing units. It was a time when at least 1,000 homes of this type were made available to citizens every year.
Some years were many more. The years 1997 and 1998 alone added more than 8,400 subsidized housing units together.
In the first decade of the 21st century, the figures began to decrease, although more than 10,000 homes were still reported between 2001 and 2010, specifically 10,137. In the last decade, the figures have plummeted.
