The number of mortgages formalized on homes fell by 16.9% in January compared to the same month of 2025, to stand at 1,447, in the Canary Islands, third autonomous community where it decreased the most, according to data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

This body that, in its latest Mortgage Statistics, reveals that the figure for those constituted for housing, unlike in the archipelago, in Spain as a whole increased by 6.3% from January to January, reaching 40,273.

The state increase was determined by the circumstance that the volume of that type of operations grew in most of the autonomous communities of the country, falling only in six of them, including Canarias among the six.

The communities with the largest increases in the annual variation rate in the number of mortgages on homes in January were Extremadura (28.8%), Foral Community of Navarre (28.6%) and Andalusia (19.2%), while those that presented the largest decreases were Aragon (-20.9%), La Rioja (-19.5%) and Canary Islands (-16.9%), highlights the INE.

The capital lent, in total, on account of the 1,447 formalized in the islands amounted to 202.5 million euros, almost 23 million less than the 223.07 granted by those subscribed in January 2025, which were then 1,741 in total.
