The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Economy, Industry, Trade and Self-Employed, Manuel Domínguez, and the presidents of the Association of Construction and Promotion Entrepreneurs of Las Palmas (AECPLP) and the Provincial Federation of Construction Entities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (FEPECO), María Salud San Gil and Olga Sanfiel, respectively, have signed this Monday, June 15, a collaboration protocol to promote industrialized construction in the islands and improve access to housing.
Industrialized construction transfers the manufacturing of a building's elements to a factory, where they are produced in an automated and serial manner. Subsequently, these components (such as walls, bathrooms, or complete structures) are transported to the site for their final assembly. This system optimizes delivery times, reduces environmental impact, and improves the precision and quality of the work.
The objective of the agreement is to establish a stable framework for collaboration to promote innovation, training, employability and the competitiveness of the construction sector, in line with the Canary Islands Industrial Development Strategy 2022-2027.
The Vice President of the Government stressed that the industrialization of construction is one of the most effective ways to address the housing problem on the islands. “We are working to promote more efficient, more sustainable, cleaner, and more agile construction, because we need new formulas that allow us to accelerate deadlines, improve quality, and facilitate access to housing,” he stated. Domínguez added that this strategy “will only be possible with public-private collaboration and with the involvement of the sector, which is key to transforming the construction model in the Canary Islands.”
For her part, the president of Fepeco, Olga Sanfiel, pointed out that industrialized construction “is part of the solution to face the current housing emergency” and recalled that there are already companies that have begun to develop projects of this type in the Archipelago.
The president of the Association of Construction and Promotion Entrepreneurs of Las Palmas, María Salud Gil, highlighted the “transformation” that the construction sector has undergone in recent years, “developing more efficient and effective construction processes.”
Among the planned lines of work are the creation of two Industrialized Construction Technical Offices, one in Tenerife and another in Gran Canaria, with a budget allocation of 200,000 euros for each employers' association, and among their functions are the development of training and capacity building programs for companies, promotion of technological and digital innovation, promotion of sustainability and circular economy projects, technical advice to SMEs and self-employed workers, dissemination of conferences and seminars, and promotion of the incorporation of young professionals into the sector.
The implementation of these offices seeks to contribute to the reduction of construction deadlines and costs, improve quality and workplace safety, promote environmental sustainability, enhance specialized training, and facilitate the modernization of companies in the sector.
The protocol will have an initial duration of three years, extendable for periods of one year, and will have a Monitoring Committee made up of representatives from the three signatory parties to evaluate its development and propose improvements.
