A total of 191 homes were occupied in the Canary Islands between January and April, thirteen more than in the same quarter of 2022, which represents an increase of 7.3%.
On the other hand, in Spain as a whole, home occupations decreased in that period by 11.8% compared to last year, with a total of 5,266 compared to 5,974 during the same period of 2022, according to data provided to EFE by the Ministry of the Interior.
Although the provided statistics do not distinguish between burglaries (when a habitual residence is occupied, whether it is a primary or secondary residence) and usurpations (properties owned by banks or empty homes) because the legal qualification corresponds to the judicial body in charge of each case, the data shows that this crime continues with the decrease that began in 2022.
This year and until April 30, this type of crime known by the security forces, with the exception of the Ertzaintza, has decreased in all autonomous communities except in the Canary Islands, in the Balearic Islands, where 152 occupations have occurred, 16 more than in the previous year, and in Asturias, with 22 occupations, two more in the first quarter of 2022.
In total numbers, Catalonia continues to be the region where there is the most occupation: 2,238 occupied properties, far ahead of Andalusia (805); Valencian Community (568) and Madrid (491).
