Between January and April 2026 a total of 5,532 mortgages on housing were registered in the Canary Islands. 80.3% (4,440) are located in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. There were 2,279 in Gran Canaria, and 2,161 in Tenerife, compared to the 2,077 and 2,517 registered respectively in the same period of 2025. While Gran Canaria is experiencing an increase of 9.7%, Tenerife registers a decrease of 14.1%.

Lanzarote is the island that experiences the greatest growth, going from 365 mortgages until April 2025 to 591 in the same period of 2026, an increase of 61.9%.

Fuerteventura, on the other hand, registers the greatest decrease, with 394 mortgages in 2026 compared to 706 in 2025, a fall of 44.2%.

This data is published through the Mortgage Statistics: Figures in Small Areas of the Canary Islands, a new operation by the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) that offers monthly mortgage data for each island.

The estimates are prepared from official information from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and administrative registries. The application of a homogeneous procedure to all periods allows for the comparison of data over time and the construction of historical series for each island.

For its part, La Palma went from 88 to 76 mortgages (−13.6%) and La Gomera from 18 to 15 (−16.7%). El Hierro, although with reduced figures, registered the highest relative increase in the archipelago, going from 9 to 16 mortgages (+77.8%).

Regarding the amount of mortgages constituted, Tenerife was the island that registered the highest amount in April 2026, with 95,366 thousand euros, followed by Gran Canaria (71,865 thousand euros), Lanzarote (12,431), Fuerteventura (12,824), La Palma (4,124) and La Gomera (765). For the month of May, there is no information available for mortgages constituted in El Hierro.

This statistic provides data on cancelled and modified mortgages, distinguishing, as also occurs with constituted mortgages, by the nature of the mortgaged property: rural properties, housing, plots of land, and other urban properties.
