The Government of Spain puts an end this Thursday, April 3, to the granting of residence permits linked to real estate investments of more than 500,000 euros, known as Golden Visas.
This eliminates the benefits currently contemplated in the residential area, as well as in other investments, eliminating residence visas for investors in Spain.
This fulfills the commitment acquired by the Minister of Housing and Urban Agenda, Isabel Rodríguez, who defended the repeal of this measure for harming the right to housing.
The decision adopted by the Executive, similar to that taken by other countries such as Ireland or Portugal, aligns with the European Commission, which in 2022 urged member states to repeal any existing citizenship system for investors.
“The elimination of real estate Golden Visas serves to give opportunities to those who today have problems accessing housing in specific places with price tension and a lack of residential supply. This modification is good news for everyone,” said the minister at the presentation of the Report that led to the Council of Ministers in April 2024.
Organic Law 1/2025 enters into force tomorrow, April 3, and completely repeals residence visas for investors, including those of a residential nature.
