Canary Islands applaud that the Spanish Government "has said that it is in a position to support" the limitation of the purchase of homes to foreigners not residing on the islands, given the problems the population faces in accessing this fundamental right.
This was stated this Thursday by the Canary Islands Minister of the area, Pablo Rodríguez, who stressed that on some islands of the archipelago "a third of home sales" are made by non-resident foreigners.
Before participating in the II Canary Islands Mobility Conference, Rodríguez recalled that the Canary Islands Government has held several meetings this year in Brussels to seek formulas for this intended limitation, an issue on which the EU has always asked for "an umbrella that allows for an exception to its own rules."
Therefore, the Canary Islands Administration has appealed to article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, which establishes that its directives must adapt to the ORs, an issue that was raised at the last summit of these regions, where "there was agreement to study ways" to support this limitation.
As the EU also requires that member states support a strategy such as this, it has been proposed to France and Portugal "and the Government of Spain was the one that had yet to pronounce itself," he said.
"The truth is that it has said that it is in a position to support this measure because it understands that from the social and economic point of view and also from the point of view of environmental sustainability it is necessary," he added.
