The Lanzaroteño siblings Belén and Josué Pérez have just opened their new restaurant La Ventolera, which brings traditional Lanzarote and Canary Islands food to the center of the tourist town of Costa Teguise.
In an interview with the radio program Más de Uno Gourmet of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero, they share the synergies with the Tahíche Teleclub run by Josué and the good reception of Canarian dishes in Costa Teguise by residents and tourists.
- How did the project to open the restaurant La Ventolera come about?
Belén: I had always dreamed of having a hospitality business, we were going to take over the Tahíche teleclub together, but at that time I was immersed in another project. I have always wanted to be a hostess and receive clients like a family coming to have an experience.
- Belén, what has been your professional career until the opening of La Ventolera?
It all started at Arena Publicidad where I was involved in design, creativity, and organization. I have also had businesses, then I trained as a coach. I have been with the Madara association for fifteen years and I am a director in a company of the Juan Padrón group.
- Josué, how did you decide to join another gastronomic project, in addition to the Teleclub?
It wasn't planned, the opportunity arose. My sister saw that a place I had been interested in for ten years was available, so we didn't even think about it.
- Where is La Ventolera located and what are its opening hours?
Josué: Opposite Apartamentos Celeste, at Avenida Islas Canarias number 22. A little further ahead of the Polo Marinero. Our opening hours are from Wednesday to Saturday from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM and on Sundays from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
- What is the gastronomic offer of La Ventolera like?
Josué: In Costa Teguise, the gastronomic offer is increasingly less ours. It is so international that sometimes you have to order coffee in English (laughs). The menu is very similar to that of the Teleclub, but with different touches, with more careful service and presentation.
Belén: We want to convey the Canarian concept to the client, our traditions, our architecture, our dishes, not only from Lanzarote, but from the Canary Islands. We have dishes from La Gomera, dishes from La Palma… and we continue to research to incorporate more.
- How are the tasks divided?
Belén: we have always been very close and we get along well, we make a good team because Josué has an innate talent for management, for leadership, and I contribute my creative part of decoration, design, communication, and customer service.
- How long have you been open and who are your main clients?
Josué: We have been open for a month and a half and our main clients are residents of the area, to whom we are very grateful for their support.
Belén: Tourists also come and what they express above all is “it’s great that a Canarian place has opened in Costa Teguise, it was needed”. It’s true that there are other Canarian restaurants like Isla Bonita, but it’s in another area.
- What are the most popular dishes in the restaurant?
Josué: The "huevos gomeros" are the most successful, they come on a platter with potatoes, free-range eggs, mushrooms, almogrote, avocado, and caramelized onion.
Also the "tacos La Ventolera" and the "escaldón palmero" which is not fish-based like the one from Lanzarote, but with pork, accompanied by smoked cheese, onion, and the two mojos.
