The Denomination of Origin Lanzarote Wines adds new international recognitions after the celebration of the Mondial des Vins Extrêmes 2026, a competition that each year distinguishes wines made in extreme cultivation conditions: steep slopes, altitude, or small islands, as is the case with Lanzarote's vineyards.
In this edition, three wineries from the island have been awarded. Bodegas Martinón has obtained the Grand Gold Medal for its Martinón Blanco Seco 2025 and the Gold Medal for its Martinón Blanco Afrutado 2025.
Bodegas Timanfaya has achieved two Grand Gold Medals, for its Timanfaya Moscatel Dulce Selección 1999 and its Timanfaya Malvasía Dulce Natural 2018, in addition to a Gold Medal for its Timanfaya Tinto 2023. Its Moscatel Dulce Selección 1999 has also been recognized with the Special Prize for the Best Ungrafted Wine, having obtained the highest score in the competition in this category.
For its part, Bodegas El Grifo has received two Gold Medals, for its Experiencia de Vendimia Listán Blanco, Crianza en Fudre 2024 and its Seco Colección 2025.
The Mondial des Vins Extrêmes is organized by CERVIM (Center for Research, Study, Safeguarding, Coordination and Valorization of Mountain Viticulture) and is the only international wine competition dedicated exclusively to heroic viticulture, that is, to wines made in extreme cultivation conditions: steep slopes, altitude, or small islands.
In this 34th edition, 1,175 wines from 432 wineries from 22 countries were presented, tasted on August 25 and 26 in Châtillon, in the Aosta Valley (Italy), by 55 international technical tasters.
Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Regulatory Council of the DOP Lanzarote Wines, has valued these results: "These awards recognize the work of our wineries in a vineyard that is cultivated in very demanding conditions. That a competition specialized in extreme viticulture distinguishes our wines in this way confirms that Lanzarote has its own place within that international panorama."
With these new awards, the DOP Lanzarote Wines continues to accumulate recognitions in international competitions specialized in viticulture under extreme conditions, an area in which the island's vineyard, cultivated on volcanic ash and protected from the wind with characteristic pits, has its own identity.
