A red and three white wines from Lanzarote were awarded at the IX National Wine Competition of Small Designations of Origin that was held on June 27 in Cangas del Narcea (Asturias).

In the category of white wines without aging, Lanzarote won three gold medals for the wines Cenizas del Volcán 2024, from Malpaís de Máguez S.L.U; Martinón Blanco Seco 2024 and Lágrima Cepas Centenarias Malvasía 2023, from Bodegas Martinón SL.

In the section of red wines with less than twelve months of aging, the wine La Grieta tinto (night harvest) 2023, produced by Malpaís de Máguez S.L.U., also obtained a gold medal.

The public company Gestión del Medio Rural de Canarias (GMR Canarias), attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, facilitated the participation of the Canarian wineries in the event by covering the cost of sending samples from the participating wineries.

With the participation of more than 120 productions in this edition, the event, organized by the entity Pequeñas DO´s, which brings together a total of 59 Designations of Origin from 15 Autonomous Communities with a production of less than 4.5 million bottles, has established itself as a promotion platform for those wine regions that, despite their smaller size, stand out for the uniqueness and excellence of their wines.

In this call, the tasting panel of the event included the participation of two tasters from the islands, the head of the ICCA Enological Station, José Luis González, and the oenologist and vice president of CERVIM, Manuel Capote.

This ninth edition of the contest has had the support of the Government of the Principality of Asturias and the City Council of Cangas del Narcea.
