Lanzarote has been the great showcase of the archipelago's gastronomy with the celebration, in the Auditorium of los Jameos del Agua, of the XIV edition of the Regional Restaurant Awards Qué Bueno Canarias.
The president of the Institution, Oswaldo Betancort, participated in the gala alongside the counselor of Food Sovereignty of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, the counselor of Economic Promotion, Nori Machín, and the island counselor of Hospitality, Armando Santana, among other authorities.
In his speech, Betancort congratulated all the award winners and highlighted the level of a gala where competing is already an achievement: “Just being among the top ten is an enormous recognition,” he stated, before highlighting the strong Lanzarotean presence with two regional awards obtained in a total of 17 nominations, “a historic figure that reflects the talent and commitment of our people.”
The president also highlighted the moment the sector is experiencing, linked to a clear strategy of the Cabildo: “We are building a model that unites product, identity and gastronomy; that connects the land and the sea with the cuisine and with the tourist experience.” Along these lines, he insisted that the gastronomic growth of the Canary Islands responds to sustained collective work: “Today visitors do not come only for the sun and the sea; they also come to savor our islands.”
The Cabildo de Lanzarote has organized and sponsored this event through the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers, together with the Qué Bueno Canarias Guide, and with the support of Saborea Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, among other institutions; in addition to numerous private companies that firmly believe in this project.
Awards for Palacio Ico and La Casa del Parmigiano
The gala left important recognitions, among them the award for Best Modern Canary Reflection Cuisine for Palacio Ico (Villa de Teguise). Alongside this, La Casa del Parmigiano (Puerto del Carmen), also from Lanzarote, was awarded as Best Foreign Cuisine.
In addition, among the special recognitions awarded this year by the jury there was a notable mention to the restaurant of the Castillo de San José (Arrecife), for its 50 years contributing value to island gastronomy; and to chef Luis Benito, for his career and his consolidated Summer Sessions at the Chiringuito Tropical (Playa Blanca).
Councillor Nori Machín has highlighted the role of public-private cooperation in this sector and the dynamic nature of Saborea Lanzarote: “The positioning of the Island as a gastronomic destination is the result of the joint work of producers, chefs, and institutions. This type of initiative reinforces that path.”
Finally, Betancort has recalled that Lanzarote and La Graciosa have managed to convert their landscape, their local product and their identity into a first-class differentiating proposal.
