Hernán Martín, president of the Asociación de Cerveceros de Lanzarote (ACLAN) has been one of the representatives of Lanzarote at the Agricultural, Livestock and Fishing Fair of Fuerteventura (FEAGA).
In an interview for the Radio Lanzarote special about the Fair, Martín answers Carlos Chavaux's questions about the reception of Lanzarote products in Fuerteventura and about ACLAN's work in collaboration with the Cabildo de Lanzarote to plant more native Lanzarote barley with which to make Lanzarote beer. tado by
- How has the experience been at FEAGA 2026?
Positive, as always, we have tried to make known the product that the three beer brands of Lanzarote make on our neighboring island, where we also have clients. The three producers gathered in ACLAN: Dos cabras, Malpaís and Nao.
- How do people react to Lanzarote's craft beers?
The most positive thing we have experienced in the classrooms we have offered about different products from Lanzarote is that, since the tasting is free, much more people try and take away a different impression than the one they had or had heard.
What I always emphasize when I talk about craft beer is that it is a totally healthy, natural product and with a low alcohol content.
- And the other products of the island?
Lanzarote's product has great acceptance among people. The potato, the sweet potato, the cheeses…. We gave a tasting of Tinajo tomato and people were delighted with the product's flavor, with the quality of Lanzarote's products.
- How has production evolved in these last ten years since the three craft breweries of Lanzarote began their activity?
The three of us grew little by little. Each time we have more presence, more local clients, each time the product is seen in more bars on the island.
In the case of Dos Cabras we launched in recent times the can format, a quite audacious proposal because people sometimes have a misgiving with this packaging. In the classrooms we also explain how the can better preserves the aromas and the product.
- Tell us about that project to give more Lanzarotean roots to the craft beer…
We would like to strengthen the feeling of belonging of the people of Lanzarote with the product. We want to revisit the topic of Lanzarote's native barley. Both barley and wheat were fundamental cereals in ancient times.
So with the Cabildo Farm and with Economic Promotion we are on the way to re-plant native barley from Lanzarote and transform it into beer.
What we are trying now, in the testing phase, is to try to put a percentage based on the kilos we can obtain. This year it has rained a lot luckily.
- For when will it be ready?
Each of the companies associated with ACLAN has its growth and production objectives. I believe that by the end of next summer, we will already have things a little clearer to see when we can have the final product.
