Matías Damián Hernández Albornoz is from Arrecife and after finishing high school, he took a cooking course at Zonzamas, but he wanted to study more, so he enrolled in the Pancho Lasso School to study the art baccalaureate.
“La Pancho Lasso completely changed my life, I started to discover artistic talents I didn't know I had, I did a lot of drawing, I became a portrait artist, I did sculpture… I liked it so much that I went to the University of Barcelona to study Industrial Graphic Design”, shares Hernández.
Thus, the young man from Arrecife entered a creative period on all levels. “I renovated my house, I started building models, I learned to make cheese, I felt better about myself… until I said to myself, why not create my own jewelry, my own costume jewelry?"
Hernández researched on the internet and began to create his own costume jewelry until he was able to take the jewelry module at Pancho Lasso, which he has just completed and with which he can now include noble metals in his pieces.
His brand is called Ego ígneo: “I wanted a name that spoke about me, hence the word ‘ego’ and another word that identified Lanzarote, where I come from, the land of fire".
In fact, Lanzarote is fundamental in his pieces, which often combine volcanic stone with one of the most corrosion and salt-resistant stainless steels, that of the 316 range, which he buys at Inoxnaval Lanzarote.
In addition, the Arrecife creator is increasingly including precious stones in his pieces. “The one I use the most is labradorite, which has a very dazzling shine, with the sun it creates halos of blue, orange or violet colors”, shares the Arrecife creator.
“I also use tiger’s eye a lot, which works very well in the male sector, it has yellow, brown tones, it is slightly dark, but it has a certain shine. Also lapis lazuli and amethyst, which is one of the ones most liked by the female sector”.
Hernández's jewelry is designed for men, but it is also very successful among women. “I always make pieces that I would wear myself, although many become unisex and I love that because we all win”, shares Hernández.
“At Christmas markets, many people tell me how great it is that you have things for men because normally one has to go somewhere else, has to go to a specific store or has to order it from abroad”, he adds.
For the moment Hernández only sells to family and friends and occasionally participates in the Christmas markets of Lanzarote. To make the commercial leap, he first has to obtain the artisan card of Lanzarote to which he will present himself in the next call and open his own workshop.
