Unemployment increased slightly in Lanzarote during the past month of April compared to the month of March. Specifically, 99 people joined the unemployment list. This is reflected in the data from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan), collected at the Lanzarote Data Center.
In contrast, the island of volcanoes experienced an annual decrease in unemployment, with 9.7% fewer unemployed compared to April 2023. Specifically, a year ago there were 8,662 unemployed and now 7,824.
Despite this increase in unemployment, the figures remain below 8,000 unemployed on the island, after the decrease of the previous month.
By municipalities, Arrecife registered 61 more unemployed, accumulating 3,945 in the month of April, while in Tías it increased by 34 people to 829. Haría had two more unemployed to 313; in Teguise it rose by two people to 929; while in Tinajo it increased by twenty more people; in Yaiza it rose by one, to 599.
The only municipality where a decrease in unemployment was experienced was San Bartolomé with 21 fewer unemployed.
Profile of the unemployed on the island
By sex, unemployment grew more among women, with 76 more unemployed and reaching 4,468 throughout the island. While in men it increased by 23 unemployed to 3,356.
Thus, the largest number of people in unemployment on the island is concentrated from 50 years onwards. Specifically, between 50 and over 60 years, Lanzarote registered 3,814 accumulated unemployed in April.
Regarding the economic sector, the hotel industry registered 85 more unemployed, reaching 1,837 in April.
Meanwhile, by level of completed studies, 125 employees with primary studies joined the unemployment lists, while it decreased by 26 people in university students and by seven in workers with some specialization in Vocational Training.
Unemployment in the Canary Islands
Unemployment in the Canary Islands decreased by 12,224 people compared to the same month of 2023, while it increased by 2,424 unemployed in relation to March of this year, according to data released this Monday by the Ministry of Labor. Unemployment fell in April in all autonomous communities, except in the Canary Islands.
These data place the Canary Islands with 231,610 job seekers, of which 33,747 are employed, 19,883 indicate special working conditions in their application (only at home or teleworking) and 177,980 are unemployed job seekers, among which are the 167,468 registered unemployed of the Islands.
