Unemployment rises sharply in Lanzarote in October

The upward trend in job creation observed for five consecutive months between May and September on the island is broken.

The unemployment lists in Lanzarote increased in October by 195 people to a total of 7,578 unemployed, according to data released this Tuesday by the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).

This breaks with the upward trend in job creation observed for five consecutive months on the island, between May and September.

Despite the increase in unemployment on the island by 2.6% in October, the current number of unemployed is 8.4% lower than the same month last year when there were 8,227 people in unemployment on the island.

The only municipality that created employment in October was Tinajo, where three people left the unemployment lists, so the total for Tinajo is 311 unemployed.

In contrast, the largest percentage increase occurred in Haría (-13.6%), which is equivalent to 40 more unemployed. Thus, the total number of unemployed in the north amounts to 335 people.

In absolute numbers, the largest increase in the number of unemployed is located in Arrecife, where there are 85 more people unemployed, an increase of 2.3% to a total of 3,819 unemployed.

Next, Tías, where unemployment increased by 70 people, 3.8% more to a total of 817. In San Bartolomé, 22 people signed up for the unemployment lists in October, 2.6% more to 869.

In Yaiza and Teguise, the number of unemployed grew by 12 and 9 people respectively, which in percentage terms represents an increase of 2.2% and 1% respectively. Thus, the total number of unemployed in Yaiza amounts to 553 people and in Teguise to 874.
