At the end of February, there were 7,378 people unemployed in Lanzarote, 40 more people than were counted at the end of January, according to data from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).
Compared to a year ago, unemployment has decreased by 8.2%, that is, 657 fewer citizens on the unemployment lists. Then there were 8,035 people.
The good news is that the number of long-term unemployed - those unemployed who have been unemployed for more than a year since they left their last job - decreased in Lanzarote by 2.7%, which is equivalent to 74 people who have found a job.
Also in the Canary Islands as a whole, which counted 70,579 long-term unemployed at the end of last month, the lowest figure since March 2009. A total of 860 people have left this group in the last year in the archipelago.
The number of people registered in the offices of the public employment services rose in the Canary Islands by 1,328, 0.85% more than the previous month. Thus, the total number of unemployed stands at 157,851, 11,879 people less than in the second month of 2024, with a decrease of 7%.
By sectors, the annual variation decreased in all branches of activity, with the decrease in Agriculture being especially significant in percentage terms, with 651 fewer people (-20.63%). Of the unemployed people in the Canary Islands at the end of February, Rest of Services (74,122) and Commerce (26,387) are the sectors with the highest number.
In February, 53,496 contracts were signed in the islands, increasing compared to the same month of 2024 in the group of under 25 years (7.24%) and in the group of 45 years (2.62%), with 780 and 396 people respectively.
