Self-employed workers in the Canary Islands can now apply for temporary incapacity benefits, with the aim of alleviating the economic burden of continuing to pay their Social Security contributions during a medical leave.

The call is retroactive to January 1, 2026, and allows for compensation of contributions paid during the first two months of temporary incapacity, or a proportional part if the leave is shorter, with a maximum of 700 euros.

The Vice President of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Economy, Industry, Trade and Self-Employed Workers, Manuel Domínguez, stated that "the measure is designed to prevent illness or accidents from causing additional economic harm to those who carry out their own activity in the Canary Islands".

With this new call, which joins other measures included in the Self-Employed Support Plan, "we are taking a real step to protect those who sustain our economy day by day. We know that sick leave can be a difficult economic blow for a self-employed worker to bear; therefore, we not only compensate for contributions, but we do so within the framework of a broad plan that improves work-life balance, access to financing, and stable employment. The Canary Islands protect their entrepreneurs and will provide them with tools to continue creating jobs on all the islands."

The aid will be processed on a non-competitive basis, on a first-come, first-served basis, provided that the applications meet the established requirements. Among the access conditions are having fiscal residence in the Canary Islands, carrying out the activity on the islands, and being up-to-date with the Tax Agency, Social Security, and the Canary Islands Tax Agency.

Self-employed workers registered in the Canary Islands, without employees; mutualists and, in certain cases, members of companies or communities of goods who carry out their own activity in the Archipelago may benefit from this line of support.

The application must be submitted entirely electronically on the website and within the period set by each call. Once the eligible situation is verified, payment will be made in a single installment, without the need for subsequent economic justification, beyond the documentation submitted with the application.
