Unemployment fell in August in Lanzarote by 0.9% compared to the previous month, which means 61 fewer people on the island's unemployment lists, totaling 6,956 unemployed, according to data provided by the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (Obecan).
Among the rest of the islands, only in Fuerteventura was there also a decrease in unemployment, specifically by 0.8%, while unemployment rose in Tenerife (0.5%), La Gomera (3.2%), El Hierro (2.8%), La Palma (0.5%) in Gran Canaria there were no changes.
Thus, the month of August concluded in Canary Islands with a total figure of 144,459 unemployed, marking a decrease of 3.83% compared to the same period last year (5,756 fewer unemployed). Despite this year-on-year improvement, the number of registered individuals experienced a slight monthly increase of 0.2% compared to July, which translates to 291 more people.
The most significant progress is observed in long-term unemployment. This group reduced its lists by 7.18% compared to August 2025 (4,899 fewer people), with the global figure standing at 63,326 unemployed.
In the whole of Spain, the labor market lost 162,840 employed people in August, below the drops in previous years for this month thanks to the dynamism of foreign employment with regularization, while unemployment rose by 44,419 people.
According to data provided this Wednesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, by the end of August, 337,917 more foreign affiliates had been registered from the extraordinary regularization process for immigrants initiated in April, which added, at the close of June, 1.17 million applications received.
