Unemployment in Lanzarote increased in January by 71 people compared to December, bringing the total number of unemployed on the island to 7,338, according to data from the Canarian Employment Observatory (Obecan).
However, compared to January of last year, when there were 8,108 unemployed in Lanzarote, unemployment has decreased by 9.5%.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, January closed with 156,523 registered unemployed, 179 more than those counted in the previous month (0.11% more), and 13,295 less than those corresponding to January 2024, that is, 7.83% less in year-on-year terms.
In the province of Las Palmas, with 80,977 unemployed, unemployment grew by 156 people, 0.19%, in the last month and fell by 7,306, 8.28%, in the last year.
In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there were 75,546 unemployed at the end of January this year, 23 more than in December 2024, that is, 0.03% more, but 5,989 less than in January of last year, which implies a year-on-year decrease of 7.35%.
According to data released this Tuesday by the Ministry of Labor, at the end of last January, the Canary Islands had 218,658 job seekers, of which 34,127 were employed.
Of these, 2,524 corresponded to agriculture, 5,767 to industry, 13,588 to construction, 122,467 to services and 12,177 to the group without previous employment.
