Last month unemployment increased in the islands by 384 people, a slight increase mainly motivated by the end of teaching, while registered unemployment stands at a total of 151,088 people, the second lowest figure in the last seventeen years, the Executive detailed in a statement.

The unemployment registered in the offices of the public employment services rose slightly by 384 people (0.25%) in the month of July in the Canary Islands, which places the number of unemployed in the autonomous community at 151,088, the second lowest figure since January 2008.

In the last year, unemployment accumulated a decrease of 12,400 unemployed people, which represents 7.58% less.

The Deputy Minister of Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isabel León, emphasized that "this moderate increase mainly motivated by the end of teaching, contrasts with the historical data that July leaves us in terms of youth unemployment and the number of long-term unemployed, which has experienced a notable reduction in a year, in line with the fall in general unemployment."

In relation to young people, unemployment fell in the seventh month of the year by 321 people (-4.22%). In year-on-year terms, it showed a figure of 800 fewer unemployed (-9.90%).

Currently, there are 7,279 unemployed people under 25 years of age in the Canary Islands, the note adds.

Even in Lanzarote, where unemployment rose more in July than on any other island in the Canary Islands, youth unemployment also fell in July, a 2.8% among those under 25 years of age

"It is the lowest figure of young people unemployed in the Canary Islands, we have never had so many young people working in the islands, a group that is present in all the employment policies of this Government," said the Deputy Minister.

Last month, those unemployed who have been out of their last job for more than a year also decreased.

In total, 321 (0.47%) people found a job, while throughout the year 6,174 long-term unemployed people joined the labor market (-8.30%).

"This is the lowest figure since February 2009," said Isabel León, who also highlighted that during the last month unemployment fell in practically all sectors.

Specifically, 569 fewer unemployed in Hospitality (-2.49%); 95 fewer in Construction (-0.75%); 44 fewer in Industry (-0.81%); 44 fewer in Commerce (-0.18%) and 33 fewer people in Agriculture (-1.29%).

However, unemployment increased in the Rest of Services, in the education sector it grew by 1,544 people.

At an interannual level, registered unemployment decreased in all economic sectors, highlighting the largest decrease in percentage terms in Agriculture, with a decrease of 13.70% and 401 fewer unemployed and Construction with a reduction of 13.61% and 1,979 fewer people.

The General Director of Labor, José Ramón Rodríguez, considered the increase in hiring positive. "In July, 71,107 contracts were formalized in the Canary Islands, increasing by 9,883 (16.14%) compared to the previous month.

The annual variation also indicates that there has been an increase in hiring of 3.02%, which means 2,085 more contracts.
