Workplace accidents decreased in the Canary Islands during the first quarter of 2026. Until March, 6,302 workplace accidents were recorded, compared to 6,669 in the same period of 2025. This represents a decrease of 5.5%. This is one of the data points that appears in the Statistics of Work Accidents, which the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) publishes monthly.
This decrease is observed in all types of accidents depending on their severity. In minor ones there has been a decrease of 5.1%, while in serious and very serious ones there was a drop of 51.1%. As for fatal accidents, in 2025 there were 8, while until February of this year 4 were registered.
By provinces, the number of work accidents decreased in Las Palmas by 4.8%, and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife by 6.4% less, with respect to the accumulated data as of March 2025.
In relation to the number of affiliated workers, in the first three months of 2026 there were 191.5 workplace accidents per 100,000. This figure is the Incidence Index and is slightly higher than in February, when it was 186.3 accidents per 100,000 affiliates. To calculate this index, workers who contribute and who have recognized professional contingencies are taken into account.
The construction sector is the one that registers a higher incidence, with 407.5 accidents per 100,000 workers, followed by agriculture (310.8). In the first case, 732 work accidents with sick leave were registered until March 2026. In agriculture there were 185 in this period.
In the industry, the index was 299.3 (385 accidents). The services sector is the one that registers the highest number of accidents (4,096) but also has a higher number of workers, so the index is the lowest of all sectors (167.1 accidents per 100,000 workers).
